Which is right for me? BOTOX vs. JUVÉDERM

Which is right for me? BOTOX vs. JUVÉDERM

Are you looking for an effective and fast-acting anti-aging treatment? Learn the difference between BOTOX vs. JUVÉDERM  so you can decide which option is best for you.

When considering refreshing your look, a key factor is understanding your own aesthetic goals and which products would work best for you. Both BOTOX® and  JUVÉDERM® are becoming increasingly popular throughout Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore and Banff due to the fact that they are minimally invasive treatments that can directly impact your appearance in very different ways.

JUVÉDERM® and BOTOX® are the most popular cosmetic injectable treatments and for a good reason. Both treatments can minimize any unwanted signs of aging, while being relatively painless, safe, affordable, and requires little to no recovery period.

However, while these are both excellent anti-aging treatments, they differ in what concerns they can address, as well as in how they work. In order to determine which option is right for you, here are some things you should consider:

BOTOX®, or botulinum toxin (its scientific name), acts at a neuromuscular level and essentially temporarily “freezes” muscle and nerve function in the selected area(s). BOTOX® works by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles which cause wrinkles. When it is injected into the treatment area, BOTOX® temporarily blocks nerve signals to the targeted muscle decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles during facial expression.

The BOTOX® procedure is fairly straightforward. During a consultation, your provider will explain what to expect and discuss your expectations for the treatment. You’ll also learn about the potential side effects and complications of BOTOX® injections. That said, BOTOX® is regarded as one of the safest cosmetic treatments available.

JUVÉDERM® on the other hand,  is a synthetic version of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that is found naturally in the body. Unlike BOTOX®JUVÉDERM® does not work by relaxing facial muscles, but rather by adding and restoring volume beneath the skin and soft tissues, helping to fill in any wrinkles and smooth out your skin. In addition to addressing creases,   JUVÉDERM® can also be used for lip augmentation or filling out facial features that have lost volume due to age.

JUVÉDERM® is pre-mixed with lidocaine (a local anesthetic) to increase your comfort during treatment.   There are multiple different variations of  JUVÉDERM® fillers to use based on the area that you would like to be treated, with the most popular areas being lips and cheeks.

BOTOX® is most often used for areas in the upper face (including the forehead and around the eyes.) This injectable can be used to address concerns such as:

  • Crow’s Feet
  • Frown Lines
  • Forehead Creases

JUVÉDERM®, on the other hand, is mostly used to tackle volume loss and structural changes to the middle and lower face and can often be used for patients who are mainly concerned about:

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Thin lips
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Receding chin and jawline

BOTOX® typically lasts 3-4 months, while  JUVÉDERM®  can last a little longer (from 12-24 months), depending on the product chosen and the area where it is injected. However, when patients undergo regular touch-ups, they can maintain the results of their treatments for longer.

The procedure typically only lasts a few minutes and doesn’t involve any downtime. The results from BOTOX® injections aren’t permanent, and they typically need to be repeated every 4 months or so to maintain the effects.
