Eliminate Discomfort, Improve Contours, Restore Your Confidence…
A large or uneven labia is a fairly common concern that can affect your physical comfort, sexual health, and self-esteem. Dr. Laliberte offers labiaplasty, a popular procedure to remove excess tissue from the labia.
Why do our Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore and Banff patients choose to undergo labiaplasty?
Labia surgery, also known as labiaplasty or labial reduction, is a cosmetic surgical procedure to reduce excess skin and soft tissue of the labia majora, the labia minora, or both. The labia are the external folds of skin and soft tissue surrounding the structures of the vulva. These folds may also be referred to as the inner vaginal lips (minora) and the outer vaginal lips (major).
Dr. Laliberte, an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon and an Alberta Labiaplasty specialist, performs labiaplasty surgery to reshape the labia with the goal of improving appearance and functionality.
Labiaplasty in Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore and Banff helps many women refine body contours to achieve a proportional, comforting appearance and a more confident, youthful self-image.

Labiaplasty & Vaginal Rejuvenation Benefits
INCREASED COMFORT
When either the inner or outer vaginal lips are over-sized, wearing certain forms of clothing can be extremely uncomfortable. Through the careful reduction of these features, it is possible to alleviate issues with pressure and friction for a healthier and far more comfortable vagina overall.
HIGHER LEVELS OF SEXUAL CONFIDENCE
Women should feel comfortable and confident about their bodies, at all stages of undress. With this procedure, the vagina can be both streamlined and made to look brand new. This treatment is especially appealing to women who’ve experienced multiple childbirths and who now have stretched and elongated vaginal lips as the result.
IMPROVED AESTHETICS
During a labiaplasty procedure, the darkly pigmented and low-hanging tissues of the inner vaginal lips can be targeted. A modest amount of this textured tissue is gently removed to reveal a smoother, lighter-toned mucosa that causes minimal friction to the labia majora.
ENHANCED PLEASURE
The removal of excess and unnecessary vaginal tissues can also greatly enhance a woman’s ability to experience sexual pleasure. This is especially true when labiaplasty procedures are performed in conjunction with clitoral hood reductions.

What Is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty (also known as labia reduction or labial trimming) is a cosmetic surgery that reconstructs and enhances the appearance of the labia minora and clitoris. Protrusion, size, and asymmetry are some of the concerns that can be addressed with this procedure. Labia hypertrophy, the clinical name for the aforementioned labial size issues, can be a source of discomfort both physically and emotionally for women of any age.
A labiaplasty procedure with Alberta’s vaginal rejuvenation expert Dr. Laliberte provides women with an enhanced vaginal aesthetic and increased comfort and confidence.

Reasons For A Labiaplasty Procedure
A labiaplasty is a procedure designed to help women deal with the embarrassment and discomfort of having large or uneven labia minora (inner labia). Some women are bothered by the feel or appearance of their labia minora protruding or hanging beyond the labia majora (outer vaginal lips). This is an issue that is often the source of much anxiety and embarrassment for women.
There are a host of reasons females have enlarged labia, including childbirth, aging, sexual activity and genetics. Females choose to have surgery for several reasons. First, there are several functional benefits when electing for a labiaplasty. Many females who suffer from an enlarged labia experience difficulty with exercise, hygiene, urinary tract infections, sexual activity and other physical activity.
Furthermore, with the increasing trend of wearing yoga pants, workout pants and swimming suits, an enlarged labium can make it difficult to wear such clothes. However, most female patients describe feeling extremely self-conscious when becoming romantically involved with their partners. These reasons and others are what females consider when choosing a labiaplasty.
How Much Does A Labiaplasty Cost?
Each of our patient’s cases is unique, however, the average cost of a Labiaplasty can range from $6,500 – $9,500 depending on the extent of the desired outcome and whether general anesthesia is requested.

Is Labiaplasty Right For Me?
The reasons different women choose to have labiaplasty are completely personal; there isn’t a setlist of criteria. Some women seek to change the aesthetic appearance of their labia, while others want to overcome their labia interfering with intimacy or certain sports or activities. Intercourse can be painful due to the labia for some women.
If you feel self-conscious during intimacy, no one deserves to have those feelings. Labiaplasty does not involve a difficult recovery.
Labiaplasty surgery may be right for you if:
- Reduce the size of their labia minora and/or clitoral hood
- Fix labial asymmetry
- Reconstruct the vulva after childbirth
- Address hygiene difficulties caused by an enlarged labia
- No longer encounter pain when wearing tight pants or bikini bottoms
- Restore stimulation
- No longer want to feel embarrassed or avoid sexual activity
Women may become more bothered by their labia after childbirth or with age since there can be some stretching out of the tissues as a result of these events. If you are uncomfortable with the look of your labia or you are experiencing irritation and discomfort as a result of certain types of clothing or activities, labiaplasty may be the right choice for you.
The Labiaplasty Procedure
Initially, there was a single procedure for labiaplasty, and it was very popular as well. With the change of time and advancement in techniques, several techniques have evolved. The two main procedures that will typically be utilized are:
The Labiaplasty Trim procedure
It is the original technique and is most natural to perform. It is also the most widely used technique used by surgeons. In this procedure, the excess part of labia minora is removed and sutured so that it is symmetrical with the labia majora.
The Labiaplasty Wedge procedure
In this procedure, a partial thickness wedge is removed from the thickest part of the labia minora. The submucosa (layer tissue beneath a mucous membrane) must be left intact by removing only a partial thickness. This procedure gives the vagina a natural look after the surgery as well, preserving the wrinkled edges.
There are various other techniques for reducing the labia minora, and all these techniques have certain advantages and disadvantages. If you are considering a labiaplasty, the key to ensure appropriate outcomes is to make sure you are going to a board-certified plastic surgeon that specializes in this procedure.
Anesthesia For A Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is an outpatient surgery. The procedure can be performed within an hour, either individually or with other cosmetic surgery. It can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the treatment plan discussed with Dr. Laliberte.
Labiaplasty & Vaginal Rejuvenation – Recovery & Results
Labiaplasty Procedure Recovery
Immediately after your Labiaplasty procedure, you may experience tenderness, discomfort and bruising. The majority of symptoms will subside on their own after about a week. Depending on how physically demanding your job is, you may be able to go back to work within 7 days or less.
Our healthcare team will prescribe medication to reduce pain and relieve swelling. Post-operative instructions regarding rest and return to normal activities may vary depending on the circumstances of your surgery. In general, Labiaplasty patients should avoid sex or any strenuous activity for four to six weeks after surgery. Most patients resume light activity around two weeks after a Labiaplasty procedure.
Postsurgical Care
The genital region of females is very sensitive and requires proper care in general. So, when undertaking a procedure like a labiaplasty, there are some post-operative instructions you need to be aware of before having the procedure.
You should avoid long showers and should pat the wound dry every time after washing. The antibiotics prescribed by the surgeon should be taken to reduce pain and inflammation, which can be present after the procedure Riding bikes, running and other physical activities will need to be avoided until you have been released by your plastic surgeon. Premature return to the activities can exert pressure on the wound and will unnecessarily delay the healing process. You should not wear tight clothes or undergarments as they cause friction against the wound. Also, you cannot indulge in sexual intercourse for at least four weeks.
Choosing To Have A Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty has functional and cosmetic benefits. Most women undergo surgery to reduce the excess labia which twists and turn and causes pain and irritation. Others want to restore their youthful look after childbirth or aging. Though the reasons are numerous, you should seek a board-certified plastic surgeon that understands the medical, mental and emotional factors of a procedure like a labiaplasty.
Labiaplasty & Vaginal Rejuvenation – Frequently Asked Questions
The scars from these procedures are very small. Plus, they can be effectively hidden in the natural creases of the area.
The Labiaplasty procedure typically takes just 45 minutes to one hour.
These surgeries don’t remove or damage any of the sensory nerves in the area, so your sensitivity shouldn’t be changed. The reality is that, since unnecessary tissue has been removed, many women report enhanced sensation after having labiaplasty. Plus, it’s important to know that these surgeries don’t involve the clitoris at all, so there cannot be any change in sensation there.
Thanks to the highly vascular nature of the vaginal area, risks with this surgery are low. The risks are for potential chronic dryness, possible pain during intercourse, and loss of sensation. Loss of sensation is a higher risk the more tissue that is removed, but the risks are still quite low.
