What Is Areola Revision Surgery?
Areolas are the pigmented areas surrounding your nipples. Similar to many personal features, areolas can vary widely in size, color and shape. It’s relatively normal to have large or differently sized areolas. If you are uncomfortable with the size of your areolas, an areola reduction is possible.
Areola revision surgery is a simple procedure that can reduce the diameter of one or both of your areolas. It can be performed independently or in conjunction with a breast lift, a breast reduction, or breast augmentation.
Am I A Good Candidate For An Areola Revision?
An Areola revision is an option for any man or woman who is dissatisfied with the size of their areolas.
This procedure works well if you have lost a significant amount of weight and, as a result, have stretched areolas. It also works well if your areolas have changed following pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Other ideal candidates include people with puffy or protruding areolas. Some people with asymmetrical areolas choose to get one reduced to match the other.
For women, areola revision surgery shouldn’t be performed until breasts have finished growing, on average, around late teens or early 20s. Adolescent males may be able to have this procedure at an earlier age.
How Much Does Areola Revision Cost?
Each of our patient’s cases is unique, however, the average cost for an Areola Revision (Cosmetic) can range from $5,000 – $9,500 depending on the complexity of your needs and whether the case will be done under local and general anaesthetic.
Areola Revision Surgery – The Consultation
How Should I Prepare For An Areola Revision Procedure?
During your consultation appointment, you should expect Dr. Laliberte to:
- examine your breasts
- listen to your aesthetic concerns
- go over your surgical options
- ask for your complete medical history, including a list of current medications
Following your consultation, you’ll be given a date for your surgery. Dr. Laliberte will provide you with specific preparation instructions.
This may include:
- avoiding certain medications, like aspirin and ibuprofen, for a week prior to your surgery date
- scheduling time off for your procedure and to allow for recovery
- arranging a ride to and from your procedure
- fasting the day prior to surgery if general anesthesia will be used
- showering with a surgical soap on the day of surgery
- avoiding makeup and other cosmetics on the day of surgery
- removing all body jewelry on the day of surgery
- wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day of surgery
Areola Revision Surgery – The Procedure
Areola revision surgery is a simple procedure that can be completed in about one hour.
When you arrive, your nurse will:
- Check your blood pressure.
- Insert an intravenous line. You may be given a medication to help you relax and another to put you to sleep.
- Apply electrodes used to monitor your heart rate during surgery.
- Confirm that you have fasted if necessary.
Before surgery, you’ll meet with Dr. Laliberte to go over any last-minute questions or concerns. Your anesthesiologist will administer a local anesthetic or prepare you for general anesthesia.
During the procedure, Dr. Laliberte will cut a doughnut-shaped piece of tissue out of your areola. This circular incision will be made along the border of your existing areola, where the scar can be more easily hidden.
They’ll secure your new areola with a permanent suture deep inside your breast. This suture will prevent the areola from stretching.
Dr. Laliberte will use removable or dissolvable stitches to close your incision site. Dr. Laliberte may also fit you with a special post-surgical bra or apply surgical dressings.
If you received a local anesthetic, you’ll be able to go home almost immediately after surgery. If you received general anesthesia, you will be monitored for a few hours prior to being discharged.
Areola Revision Recovery & Results
Recovery from areola revision surgery is generally fast. You may have experienced some swelling and bruising, however, you can usually go back to work within one or two days.
Dr. Laliberte might mention that you should:
- expect an increase in pain during your first post-surgical period
- take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil)
- wear a surgical bra or soft sports bra for several weeks
- abstain from physical chest contact for three to four weeks
- refrain from lifting heavy objects or doing any strenuous cardio for the first few weeks
It may take a few weeks before you’re able to experience the results of your areola revision procedure. Typically the initial period of swelling and bruising often obscures the immediate results.
As swelling subsides, your breasts will settle into their final position. You’ll notice that your areolas appear smaller and more centered and a ring-shaped scar around your new areola, which can take up to one year to heal.
You will typically have a follow-up consultation with Dr. Laliberte within a few weeks after your surgery, monitoring your healing progress and additionally removing stitches, as necessary. Dr. Laliberte may also provide you with topical medications that can help reduce the appearance of scars.
Areola Revision And Areola Reduction Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Areola revision does not remove the breast ducts that are located in the nipple. It is also important to remember, that there is a certain percentage of women who cannot breast feed, regardless of whether or not they have had a breast procedure.
Yes, nipple and areola revision is permanent. Just be aware that the natural aging process may change the shape of the breast over time.
If you plan to become pregnant in the future, breast reduction surgery may limit your ability to breastfeed, particularly if a large amount of breast tissue is removed or if the milk ducts are affected by the surgery. These are good questions to discuss during your breast reduction consultation.
The incisions are small and leave very small scars, which will fade over time with the correct scar management and treatment as directed by our healthcare team.
As with all cosmetic surgeries, there are some risks involved. These risks include bleeding, infection and collection of fluid under the skin, swelling and blood clots. Dr. Laliberte will do everything he can to minimize the risks associated with surgery.
