MOLE REMOVAL + SCAR REVISION AT RADIANCE PLASTIC SURGERY
Mole Removal & Scar Revision Benefits
SMOOTH, CLEAR SKIN
Mole removal is an excellent way to improve self-esteem and confidence in appearance, as the days of feeling like everyone is staring at a particular mole or two come to an end. Many moles are in prominent, difficult-to-conceal areas, and people with moles frequently feel embarrassed as a result.
MEDICAL CONCERNS
Not all moles are harmless. While most are benign, those that change shape or color are a concern, as they could indicate the development of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. It’s therefore essential to have pre-cancerous and any other suspicious moles biopsied sooner rather than later.
SKIN IRRITATION
Mole removal seriously reduces skin irritation that may occur when certain moles rub against jewelry or clothes.
RELIEVE PAIN
Some moles are just plain painful! Many grow in quantities in less-than-convenient places, such as on the head, which makes brushing and combing the hair painful. Any hair follicle on the body that grows close to or within a mole can become inflamed, resulting in pain and discomfort.
Mole Removal at Radiance Plastic Surgery
What Is Mole Removal?
Mole removal by cosmetic excision and plastic surgery closure is a common procedure for those who have one or more benign moles (i.e. non-cancer) that are bothersome. The procedure typically takes 30 minutes and is performed in-office by appointment only.
Mole removal takes only a short time. Dr. Laliberte will numb the area around the mole and cut it out, along with a margin of healthy skin if necessary. The procedure may leave a small permanent scar.
Preparing For Your Mole Removal Procedure
If you have a mole that concerns you, your family doctor or GP can commonly let you know if it’s normal or needs further investigation. He or she may then refer you to Radiance Plastic Surgery who specializes in Mole Removal.
It’s a good idea to arrive for your appointment well-prepared. Here’s some information to help you get ready.
List any changes you’ve noticed or any new symptoms you’re experiencing. Include any that may seem unrelated to the reason for which you scheduled the appointment.
Bring a list of all medications, vitamins or supplements that you’re taking.
If you’ve had a melanoma or a mole removed in the past, note the location of the lesion and the date of removal. If you have the biopsy report, bring it with you.
Don’t wear makeup or opaque nail polish to your appointment. These products make it difficult for your doctor to perform a thorough exam.
The Mole Removal Procedure
Mole removal is a simple kind of surgery. Depending on your particular situation, Dr. Laliberte will typically choose one of two ways:
Surgical excision. Dr. Laliberte will numb the area. Using a scalpel or a sharp, circular blade to cut out the mole and some healthy skin around it then stitch the skin closed.

Scar Revision at Radiance Plastic Surgery
What Is Scar Revision?
Scar revision surgery will attempt to minimize a scar so that it is less conspicuous and blends in with the surrounding skin tone and texture.
Scars are visible signs that remain after a wound has healed. They are the unavoidable results of injury or surgery, and their development can be unpredictable. Poor healing may contribute to scars that are obvious, unsightly or disfiguring. Even a wound that heals well can result in a scar that affects your appearance. Scars may be noticeable due to their size, shape or location; they can also be raised or depressed and may differ in color or texture from the surrounding healthy tissue.
Your treatment options may vary based on the type and degree of scarring and can include:
- Simple topical treatments
- Minimally invasive procedures
- Surgical revision with advanced techniques in wound closure
Scar revision surgery cannot eliminate or fully remove a scar, but rather improves the appearance of the scar by changing its size, narrowing the width, reducing the thickness or raising an indented or depressed scar. Surgery typically takes 1 hour or less.
Preparing For Your Scar Revision Procedure
Prior to your scar revision procedure, you may be asked to:
- Get lab testing or a medical evaluation
- Take certain medications or adjust your current medications
- Stop smoking well in advance of surgery
- Avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding
What Are The Steps Of A Scar Revision Procedure?
Step 1 – Anesthesia
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include local anesthesia, intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. Laliberte will recommend the best choice for you.
Step 2 – The treatment
The degree of improvement that can be achieved with scar revision will depend on the severity of your scarring, and the type, size and location of the scar. In some cases, a single technique may provide significant improvement. However, Dr. Laliberte may recommend a combination of scar revision techniques to achieve the best results.
Topical treatments, such as gels, tapes or external compression, can help in wound closure and healing, or to reduce the ability of skin to produce irregular pigment. These products may be used to treat existing surface scars and discoloration, and to aid in the healing of scar revision procedures.
Injectable treatments may also be used. Dermal filler can be used to fill depressed or concave scars. Depending on the injectable substance used and your particular scar conditions, results may last from three months to several years. Therapy must be repeated to maintain results. Another form of injection therapy uses steroidal-based compounds to reduce collagen formation and can alter the appearance, size and texture of raised scar tissue.
Surface treatments are most often used for cosmetic improvement of scars. These methods can soften surface irregularities and reduce uneven pigmentation. Surface treatments are a controlled means of either mechanically removing the top layers of skin or changing the nature of tissue.
Step 3 – Sometimes for deeper scars an incision is needed to surgically remove the old scar
Step 4 – Closing the incisions
Some scars require layered closure. Layered closure is often used where excision extends to tissue below the skin surface or in areas with a high degree of movement. The first step, or layer, requires sub-dermal closure (below the skin surface) with absorbable or non-removable sutures. Layers of closure continue to build, concluding with closure of the remaining surface wound.
