What is a Blepharoplasty | Eyelid Lift

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as an Eyelid Lift, is a cosmetic facial plastic surgery that is designed to remove excess fat and skin from around the eyelids to provide a more refreshed look.  Blepharoplasty is used to improve the effects of aging around the eyelids, such as the drooping and sagging of upper eyelid skin, or the excess fat that creates bags in the lower eyelid area. The surgery can also be performed on younger patients, as hooded upper eyelid skin or excess fat around the eyes are not exclusively attributed to aging.

Why should I choose a Blepharoplasty | Eyelid Lift?

Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

You may consider blepharoplasty if droopy or sagging eyelids keep your eyes from opening completely or pull down your lower eyelids. Removing excess tissue from your upper eyelids can improve your vision. Upper and lower lid blepharoplasty can make your eyes appear younger and more alert.

Blepharoplasty may be an option if you experience:

  • Baggy/droopy upper eyelids
  • Excess skin on your upper eyelids that interfere with your peripheral vision
  • Excess skin on your lower eyelids
  • Bags under your eyes

How much does Blepharoplasty | Eyelid Lift cost?

Each of our patient’s cases is unique, however, the average cost of Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift) can range from $2,500 – $4,200

Surgery is performed on the upper lids and typically takes under 1 hour.

How should I prepare for a Blepharoplasty | Eyelid Lift

Before scheduling blepharoplasty, you will meet with Dr. Laliberte to discuss:

  • Your medical history. Your surgeon will ask questions about previous surgeries and past or current conditions, such as dry eyes, glaucoma, allergies, circulatory problems, thyroid problems and diabetes. Your doctor will also ask about your use of medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
  • Your expectations. An honest discussion of your hopes and motivation for surgery will help set the stage for a satisfactory outcome. Your surgeon will discuss with you whether the procedure is likely to work well for you.

Before your eyelid surgery, you’ll undergo:

  • A physical examination. Your surgeon will conduct a physical examination, which may include testing your tear production and measuring parts of your eyelids.
  • A vision examination. Your eye doctor will examine your eyes and test your vision, including your peripheral vision. This is needed to support an insurance claim.
  • Eyelid photography. Your eyes will be photographed from different angles. These photos help with planning the surgery, assessing its immediate and long-term effects, and supporting an insurance claim.

The Blepharoplasty | Eyelid Lift Procedure

Before the procedure

Blepharoplasty is usually performed in an outpatient setting. Your surgeon injects numbing medication into your eyelids and administers intravenous medication to help you relax.

During your procedure

If you have surgery on your upper and lower eyelids, Dr. Laliberte generally works on your upper lids first. Dr. Laliberte will cut along the fold of the eyelid, removing some excess skin, muscle and possibly fat, and close the cut.

On the lower lid, Dr. Laliberte will make a cut just below the lashes in your eye’s natural crease or inside the lower lid. Dr. Laliberte will then remove or redistribute excess fat, muscle and sagging skin, and close the cut.

If your upper eyelid droops close to your pupil, Dr. Laliberte may do blepharoplasty with a procedure called ptosis that provides additional support to the eyebrow muscle.

After your procedure

After surgery, you will spend a period of time in a recovery room, where you are monitored for any complications. You may be able to leave later that day to recuperate at home.

After surgery you may temporarily experience:

  • Blurred vision from the lubricating ointment applied to your eyes
  • Watering eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Double vision
  • Puffy, numb eyelids
  • Swelling and bruising similar to having black eyes
  • Pain or discomfort

Post-procedure recovery

Many people express satisfaction with the results of blepharoplasty, such as a more rested and youthful appearance and more self-confidence. For some people, the results of surgery may last a lifetime. For others, droopy eyelids may recur.

Bruising and swelling generally subside in 10 to 14 days, which may be when you feel comfortable going out in public again. Scars from the surgical cuts may take months to fade. Take care to protect your delicate eyelid skin from too much sun exposure.

Let your discomfort be your guide. You can resume normal activities at the end of the first week and gentle exercise at the end of 2 weeks. It may take 4 weeks to get back to significant aerobic or physical activity.

There are many other causes of peripheral vision loss, including glaucoma, occlusions, a detached retina or a compression of the optic nerve. If you are experiencing peripheral vision loss, it is important to schedule an appointment with our eye doctor for a thorough examination and diagnosis.[/cq_vc_accordion_item][cq_vc_accordion_item accordiontitle=”Can blepharoplasty be performed on both men and women?”]Yes. It should be noted that a significant number of men and women of all ages elect to have blepharoplasty to achieve a more youthful look and for more comfortable positioning of the eyelid skin.[/cq_vc_accordion_item][cq_vc_accordion_item accordiontitle=”Is there an age limit to undergo blepharoplasty?”]There is no correct age for considering blepharoplasty. Excessive skin in the upper lids, or bulging fat in the lower lids are commonly seen with signs of aging. The exact age depends on your heredity. Certainly, women in their forties and fifties comprise the majority of patients. If you are in good health without serious eye problems, your age alone should not keep you from having this procedure.[/cq_vc_accordion_item][cq_vc_accordion_item accordiontitle=”Are there any visible scars from the blepharoplasty surgery?”]Most of the time there is no visible scar after the healing is complete. Incisions in the eyelids are made following natural skin folds and creases. Once healed, the hairline scars will fade, leaving a very inconspicuous incision line that becomes virtually unnoticeable after the healing.[/cq_vc_accordion_item][cq_vc_accordion_item accordiontitle=”Is there any swelling or bruising after the blepharoplasty procedure?”]There is usually some swelling which gradually resolves after one to two weeks. There may be some bruising, but very little and this too fades rapidly. Women can camouflage bruises fairly easily at seven to ten days with make-up.[/cq_vc_accordion_item][/cq_vc_accordion]
