Winter Is Coming! Bid Dry Skin Adieu – Winter Skin Care

During the colder months throughout Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore and Banff – a combination of frigid temperatures, low humidity, and forced indoor heat can strip the skin of much-needed moisture. Furthermore, ongoing moisture loss impairs the skin’s barrier function and can exacerbate conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and rosacea.

Transforming dry skin is about replenishing lost moisture—both from within and via the application of hydrating skin care products. Drink plenty of water and incorporate fruits and vegetables with a high water content into your diet, such as cucumbers, melon, spinach and strawberries. Treat your skin to products containing ingredients known to help retain moisture, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides.

As temperatures start to rise—and days spent in the sun inevitably become longer and more frequent—don’t forget to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen and an antioxidant product daily to help defend the skin from damage-causing UV rays.

Save Face

When the temperature dips, the skin’s exfoliation process naturally slows, causing dead skin to build up on the surface. This not only dulls the complexion and makes fine lines and wrinkles more prominent, but also lessens the ability of moisturizers to do their job.

To unearth brighter skin, start by dislodging dead skin with a gentle exfoliant. AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser contains spherical jojoba beads that gently slough away dry skin. Before moisturizing, apply Hydrating Complex from SkinMedica® to seal in moisture and enhance the results of your daily moisturizer.

Because certain areas of the face, such as the lips and under-eyes, contain few—or no—oil glands, they can be the last to kick lingering signs of dryness. Treat these areas with extra care: Apply a hydrating eye cream morning and night; for lips, try TNS Lip Plump System™, a two-step targeted treatment that provides the lips with rich emollients, peptides, and hyaluronic filling spheres to improve lip moisturization.

Beautify the Body

Long, hot showers may feel comforting during the lengthy stretch of winter, but they also deplete moisture, leaving skin feeling dry, tight and itchy. Reversing these drying effects now will help to ensure that skin is shorts- and sandals-ready for spring.

Reach for a moisture-replenishing remedy such as SkinMedica TNS Body Lotion™. In addition to sodium hyaluronate, this nourishing lotion contains patented TNS® and retionoids, so it works double-duty to improve skin texture and tone while smoothing rough, thick patches on the elbows and knees. Apply to damp skin right out of the shower to lock in moisture.
